| My almost 6 year old daughter just started pooping in her panties? Not completely emptying her bowels in them, but leaving a 1/2 inch thick "sguy mark" of poop from the front of her panties to the back and all over her bottom. She has been using the toilet since she was about 3yo. We had a little bit of a hard time with getting her to poop in the toilet, she would hold it and to what she does now. I would have to give her laxatives and glycerin suppositories to make her go. But she has been pooping fine for the last year and a half or so. Then all of a sudden one day, I smelled poop and it was her. I took her into the restroom and had her take her panties off and there were chunks of poop falling out of them! I asked her why she was holding it and she says that she doesn't know. I don't know if it is laziness or what is going on. My husband just asked her and she told him that she goes poop then has to go again and again and doesn't like to have to keep going. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or is this normal? I am so frustrated by this. I am having to shower her off 4-5 times a day and she is going through 4-5 pairs of panties a day. |
| This is a problem I am quite familiar with. I have a 4 year old with encopresis. What happens is that she was so constipated and got so much stool backed up in her colon that she couldn't get it out and small amounts of liquidy stool leaked around it. Then her colon got so stretched out it damaged the muscles and nerves around her bottom and she had trouble feeling the poop coming out. She had a similar history with potty training as your daughter and was diagnosed at age 3. The pediatrician put her on Miralax and a high fiber diet (yes, lots and lots of prunes!) The good news is that the stretching of those muscles heals over time, and we were able to take her off Miralax recently, but we still need to keep her on a very high fiber diet including Benefiber. She occasionally will have a minor recurrence, but usually if we give her extra fiber for a day or two and just encourage her to relax and "let it all out" she is fine. You need to take your daughter to the doctor, because if she's soiling herself that often, she's probably going to need more than just a high fiber diet to "clean her out". What we had to do was a day of massive doses of Miralax and an enema to get our daughter's problem under control initially. But don't try to do it on your own; ask your doctor. Good luck! |
